Advanced orthodontic training
During Orthodontics 2 & 3 course participants are assigned patients to manage under the supervision of University appointed tutors. Treatment planning of the patients treated in the clinic sessions are held in a group seminar situation.
This course is both clinical and theoretical with chair-side sessions, lectures and seminars.
The clinical component of the course takes place within the Orthodontic Clinic of the Sydney Dental Hospital and involves treating NSW Local Health District patients. These sessions will provide practical instruction and experience in the placement and adjustment of orthodontic appliances. New patients with mainly Class 1 mild crowding malocclusions will be assessed, diagnosed and treated. The participants will also manage patients in different stages of orthodontic treatment, who have already started treatment from previous years. At the clinical sessions participants will have the opportunity to place fixed appliances and manage cases, through to the removal of fixed appliances and the fitting of retainers. Participants will also see orthodontic patients on review and in retention from previous course participants.
There is a requirement that registrants participate in seminars on patient management, theoretical presentations and journal reviews. The participants will be given the option to present their own cases will a full set of diagnostic records at the end of the morning sessions according to time availability and expression of interest. It is the intention of the course to present all participants with a broad range of orthodontic problems and management options. However, the cases the participants will treat in the clinic will mainly be simple malocclusion cases.
This course is designed to enable those who have completed Orthodontics 1 to further develop their understanding on orthodontic fundamentals and principles.

- Treatment with Sequential Clear Aligners
- Wire Bending exercise
- Extraction vs Non extraction treatments (rationale, considerations, Do’s, and Don’ts)
- Class II and Class III treatment options with case scenarios (Orthopaedic, camouflage, surgical treatments)
- Treatment of skeletal discrepancies in growing patient
- Finishing and Detailing in Orthodontics
- Aetiology of relapse and contributing factors. The role of a dental practitioner in the management of fixed and removable retainers
- Case discussions and literature review.
Learning outcomes
- Recognise and diagnose malocclusions
- Possess skills to bond fixed orthodontic appliances and perform basic orthodontic adjustments
- Critically analyse orthodontic literature and apply it clinically
Course delivery method
12 monthly theoretical and practical sessions.
Course pre-requisites
Participants must have completed Orthodontics 1 to be admitted to the course and there are a limited number of places available (12). Places will be offered in the first instance to previous successful candidates of Orthodontics 1. After these places are allocated, offers will be accepted from those completing Orthodontics 1 in 2025.
In order to comply with NSW Department of Health Policy directives to be able to treat patients within a public hospital, there is a mandatory requirement for registrants to supply. Registrants will be sent a detailed information pack upon registration detailing the specific requirements and deadlines for lodgement, however, please see below the list of documents to prepare.

Additional Course Information
All 12 sessions are mandatory and must be attended to successfully complete this course.
Theoretical sessions will be held at Rydges Sydney Central.
