Evidence-based assessment, prevention and management for health professionals

Diabetes-related foot ulcers remain a major cause of morbidity, hospitalisation, infection and lower-limb amputation. This short course equips health professionals with the clinical knowledge and practical reasoning skills needed to assess risk, intervene early and manage diabetes-related foot ulceration effectively within their scope of practice.

Delivered by leading experts from the University of Sydney and Sydney Local Health Districts, the course focuses on real-world clinical application, multidisciplinary care pathways and contemporary, evidence-based treatment strategies.

  • Identify the aetiology of diabetes-related foot ulcers using chairside and advanced assessment tools.
  • Recognise key risk factors including peripheral neuropathy, peripheral arterial disease and foot deformity.
  • Develop multidisciplinary management plans, including offloading, debridement and infection management.
  • Understand the role of advanced therapies in promoting wound healing.
  • Apply evidence-based decision-making aligned to individual scope of practice.

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of this short course, you will be able to:

  • Determine the aetiology of diabetes-related foot ulcers using chairside and advanced diagnostic tools.
  • Develop multidisciplinary management plans that include pressure offloading, wound debridement, and the prevention and treatment of infection.

    Note: Implementation of treatment will be based on participants’ role and scope of practice. Participants are expected to demonstrate understanding of their role and engage with relevant interdisciplinary team members.
  • Understand the role of relevant advanced therapies in promoting healing.

Course pre-requisites

Participants are expected to have a foundational knowledge of wound care practice. Clinical participants should be registered with AHPRA or a suitable professional body, while non-clinical participants should work in roles requiring applied knowledge of wound care principles.

Participants must complete at least 75% of the program content to be eligible for completion recognition. Progress is tracked, and a self-declaration is required at the end of the program.

Upon successful completion, participants will receive a Certificate of Completion from the University of Sydney.
