The University of Sydney has developed a unique training course to support health professionals in their engagement with Digital Health.
Position yourself for the future by participating in our custom-built collaborative and team-based learning experience that will provide powerful insights into how telehealth and virtual care can reshape models of healthcare.
This online learning course has been designed by Dr. Audrey P Wang, a Senior Lecturer in Digital Health (Biomedical Informatics and Digital Health, Faculty of Medicine and Health) at the University of Sydney, to demonstrate how new and emerging technologies can enhance clinical decision making and change clinical outcomes.
You will receive detailed evidence based and ethical insights into how technologies such as video, wearable devices, smartphone apps, virtual reality programs, artificial intelligence and data analytics are shaping the future of healthcare from industry leading digital health academics and informatics leaders.
At the end of the course all participants will receive:
- A Digital Health Essentials micro-credential badge
- Credits toward University of Sydney postgraduate studies (subject to satisfactory assessment and approvals

The course is delivered online and organised into six weekly modules, with a pre-course orientation session. Attendance is mandatory for the six modules.

Learning outcomes
By the end of this course, participants should be able to:
- describe the current provision and policy context of virtual care technologies, electronic health records/repository systems, and digital health platforms used in Australia (L01)
- describe the benefits of virtual care technologies to patients, carers and health professionals (L02)
- apply and optimise digital health tools across multiple settings in health and social care (L03)
- evaluate the current use of digital health technologies including virtual care and formulate measurable outcomes relative to scope of practice and stakeholder needs (L04)
- identify a service improvement or data monitoring project within scope of practice using virtual care or other digital health solutions (L05)
Mandatory course pre-requisites
- Participants must be health professionals working in clinical practice or people working in health management or IT professionals interested in understanding the challenges facing clinicians in digital health solutions
- The assessment requires participants to develop a service improvement plan within their own clinical practice or scope of practice
- Participants will require a computer with internet access as well as a web-camera and speakers/headset. Zoom video-conferencing software is required and may be downloaded free following instructions provided on the Canvas LMS site for the course. All learning materials are available via the Modules tab in Canvas
- Participants are expected to attend weekly live-online classes. Should participants be unable to attend some online-live sessions, exemptions may be requested from the course co-ordinator
- The course is graded as Pass/Fail. Participants must satisfactorily complete all assessment tasks to pass the course

Recordings of online-live events will be made available via the Canvas LMS for two weeks after the event.
Weekly in-course quizzes
- 0-question online quiz covering material from the week’s lecture material and resources (weekly). Five attempts at each quiz are allowed with the highest marks being used in grading. (W: 30% L: 15min)

Participation in weekly online discussion boards
- Short reflective post on the week’s Tutorial material (weekly). (W: 15% L: 200 words)

Service-improvement project plan
- Short summary video and written proposal for improving the participant’s current practice by applying concepts from the course. (Video W: 5% L: 5 min) (Written W: 50% L: 1,500 words)

Course duration
The duration of this course is 6 weeks with a pre-course orientation week. The study commitment is on average 8.5 hours per week (total of approximately 50 hours).
Accreditation
Upon successful completion, participants will receive:
- Digital badge: Digital Health Essentials
- Equivalent credit point of 2CP
- Credit available for 5 years
The Micro-credential is not a higher education award and is not a qualification recognised under the Australian Qualifications Framework
